Blackjack Myths

Advice is usually only as good as the expertise of the person shoveling it in your direction. So when you hear these statements about blackjack (or any card game for that matter) that are vague – but you hear them so many times they just work their way into the truth of society – you’re getting caught up in a bunch of bull that actually could end up costing you money in the long run.

The biggest eye-roller of them all to me is whining and crying about how the amateur to your right doesn’t know what he’s doing, and his wrong moves are screwing up your game, helping the dealer, and costing everyone else money. Yes, I’ve seen actual fights started over this. Probably alcohol and frustration fueled, but nonetheless…

Listen closely and remember this message before you douse your tablemate with that watered-down poor excuse for a vodka tonic next time. The odds are the odds, and they have nothing to do with the decisions you or anyone else at the table make. Yes, there’s no debating that dumb people make dumb decisions, but for every time player X makes a wrong hit that gives the dealer a table-clearing 20, the next time it’s just as likely his dumb move will save the table from the dealer pulling out a 21, and instead he busts all over the place. It’s indisputable. Bad moves over the course of a lengthy session have no real affect on the outcome of the game.

There are so many of these to shoot down, but I’ll go with one more common one for now. What is the point of the game? If you say to get as close to 21 as possible before going over, get your rack, your chips, your drink and do yourself a favor and cash in. Hit the slots or the buffet, this game isn’t for you.

Never listen to the crappy actors giving you tutorials in your hotel room at 3:30 in the morning. They might think that’s the object of the game, as might your grandmother, but you know to win blackjack online you need to do one of two things: have a higher hand that the dealer or stay alive while the dealer busts. Neither has anything to do with being as close to 21 as possible.

I’ll keep this going in the future, there’s at least 3 or 4 more I’m dying to rip through.
